I have been invited to volunteer with a team from Auburn to try to help photograph the ivory-billed woodpecker. This would be a honor. The catch is that they want me to sign a waiver granting them the right to scientifically publish the first photos of the bird if I happen to be the fortunate one to take the photos. After the photo has been scientifically released then I would retain full rights to the photo.

I am reluctant to sign such a release. I feel that if I took the photo I should be entitled to compensation and photography credit for any publishing. What do you all think???

I'm a bit confused. It is nice of them to invite you... but... isn't this a public park? Can't you just go on your own? If not, and they have some special way to get in, then I would probably sign the release (sounds like fun).

Otherwise, I wouldn't sign, and I'd announce "seeya there!"

It is public land. The picture would be ground breaking....almost the equivalant of a bigfoot photo. I am not certain if a photo of this bird exists. It has not been photographed since at least the 1950s at any rate. I just don't know that I should agree to sign away any rights. Perhaps a prearranged contract if the photo is obtained other the signing away of rights.

Well, what can they do if you say that you won't sign the release? They can't do anything, by the sound of it...

I would need to sign the release to be part of the team. I can hunt on my own no problems but if I want to be a part of what they are doing I would need to agree to those terms. I am leaning toward declining.

I would decline also and keep hunting, just step up my frequency if possible. No use giving away your glory when you find it. Just think of the way you will feel when you make the ground breaking photo and you don't have to give the credit to someone else.

While I certainly understand your reluctance to sign away your rights of "first Publication" I think, if given this opportunity, I would. The team probably has a clue already where to find the subject.

The accolades of getting that special picture will give you the credit, and then as you said you will after a period of time be given your right of publication back.

People forget so quickly, and you will have the last word so to speak. Just IMHO.

Good luck!
