I have use of a brand new Kodak EasyShare z710 with 10x zoom and 7.1 megapixels. I run Windows ME. For the life of me I can't get pictures to load up. Can my camera be too advanced for my software?

Hey, Randy,

We own a Kodak Z740. It probably uses the same software as yours. I imagine it will run on Windows ME, but you should probably check the Kodak website to be sure.

We don't care for the Kodak software, but when we uninstalled it the computer would no longer "see" the camera when we plugged it in. We reinstalled and all was ok, but we are stuck with the Kodak software. We just don't use it to transfer pictures. Anyway, you might try uninstalling and then reinstalling and see if that works. But first, I would check the Kodak website to make sure you have the right software version for ME.

Hope that helps!

The CD that is provided with the camera itself will not download. I went to kodak and found a version that will work for my computer and the camera, but evertime I attempt to download it, it causes my computer to "lock up" near the end of the download. A few minutes later I get the blue screen of death. I'm not sure what I'm going to have to do now.

Oh great. Well, if you don't mind me saying so, ME and the Kodak software are not the best. I would run Disk Cleanup in your Accessories folder (I think ME has that. I know XP does) that will clean out any temp files.

Go back to the Kodak website and check the system requirements for the software. Maybe you don't have enough memory to run it?

If you do have enough memory, reboot and try re-installing. But before you do that, make sure you don't have a lot of stuff running in the backround. If there are a lot of icons in the systray(near the clock), be sure to shut those down first.

Good luck!

Like Larry already hinted at, your biggest problem is probably Windows ME. That operating system was probably Microsoft's biggest mistake.

You should probably get an external USB card reader, though. I've had quite a few digital cameras from several different manufacturers, and I don't think I've ever installed the software that came with any of them. I use a card reader to get to the pictures instead. Plug the card into the reader and your computer sees it as if it was just another hard drive.

Yes it is. We have it loaded becuase when we unistalled it, it took something out of plug and play and the PC didn't "see" the camera anymore.

That's what we do at work too. Works great.

Janice is getting pretty down on our Kodak. It seem to have a hard time with auto focus in low light conditions. Persoanlly, I'd like a Canon EOS, but no way we can spring for that right now. Janice is thinking about one of the smaller "pocket" canons, but I like the big lenses.

Take a look at the small Olympus P&S cameras. That's always been one of my favorite brands. I have four Canon EOS bodies (two film, and two digital), but I still use my four year old Olympus C-8080WZ just as much as the SLRs. It's a great camera. And, many of the pocket sized Olympus cameras are waterproof. Many of my Canon toting friends have an Olympus P&S as a backup, and some have posted very cool pictures and video they've taken with them under water!

Cool. I'll tell her, thanks.

What is the zoom on the Olympus and how many megapixels?

I've always liked the Olympus cameras as well. I'm having to start over with all my optic gear and will try to find the best bang for my bucks.

The Olympus Stylus models are the waterproof ones. There are about a half dozen different ones. It looks like they are all 7 megapixels, with one having 5x zoom and the rest are 3x. You can read the reviews on them here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/cameras_dig6.html

Oops. Looks like there are some 8mp versions of the Stylus available, too. And a 10mp one. The reviews for those are here: http://www.steves-digicams.com/cameras_dig8.html

Cool! I'll go check on Steve's page. That is a great web site.

Janice just got done finishing the bills and now it looks like we'll need a plumber to see what's wrong with the shower in our remodeled bathroom, so I don't think I will mention this to her just yet I may end up moving in with you and the cats if I did that
