Awwwww...NBC cancels WEST WING after 7 years! It is hard for me to lose a show that had become familiar and thought provoking once again.

I know these shows have a certain shelf life so to speak, but miss them just the same.

Any one else feel this way about the cancelizaion of this show?

I'm going to miss it. Its always been one of Janice's favorite show, but its been more of an acquired taste for me. I started off calling it "The Left Wing".

I love the characters on the show, especially Josh Malina's Will Bailey. I guess that's because he is a fellow Sephardic Jew I've always been a big fan of Jimmy Smits and I think he has made the show this year.

I think they brought in Jimmy Smits because of his proven audience draw. It obviously didn't work. Martin Sheen was a bigger draw.

Sephardic Jews scare me. Maybe I have them confused. It is like they have a secret, I don't know.

I think you mean Kabbalist Jews? That is Jewish Mysticism and seems to be all the rage with Hollywood stars right now. Just weird stuff, IMHO.

Josh Malina and I are Sephardic Jews, meaning our ancestors were expelled from Spain during the Spanish Inquisition and settled in Greece and Turkey, primarily. We differ from Ashkenazi Jews (those who can trace their ancestry to Eastern Europe) in our foods and traditions. Some other famous Sephardics are: Issac Mizrachi, the fashion designer; Hank Azaria, actor and comedian; Chaim Solomon, financier of the American Revolution, Mark Spitz, Olympic Champion, Eydie Gorme, Lanie Kazan, Emma Lazarus (A poet who wrote the inscription on the Statue of Liberty.."Give us your poor"...etc.) and Benjamin Cardozo, former U.S. Supreme Court justice.

I, too, will miss The West Wing. Even though it featured one party more than the other, I thought it did a good job of coming up with the better points of each sides' debates on every issue.

I even used the Jimmy Smits / Alan Alda Presidential Debate to teach about the Executive Branch in my Govt class. We should be so lucky to have two such candidates, IMHO.

I agree. I think Santos would make a great President.

That's neat. I didn't know you were a teacher. My wife was a deaf education teacher for many years and I always wanted to teach history and poli sci. Unfortunately, my career counselor advised me that there were no teaching jobs, so I changed majors. I've always regretted that.

I read "The Source" (Michener) while living in the Middle East several years ago. It mentioned that people named Cohen and Levi were of the rabbinical class. Now, I've heard of the tribe of Levi (my kids love to watch 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'), but I don't get the connection between Cohen and Levi and rabbi-ness.

Can you shed any light? Much appreciated.

Sure. I'll try anyway

There are 12 tribes of ancient Israel. The Cohanim (Cohens) were the priests (Rabbis). This goes back to Aaron, who is considered to be a patriarch.

Levys, (like me )were the tribe that maintained the temple. My ancestors acted as caretakers and assistants to the Cohanim.
