HGTV 'Dream Home' winner

I entered thousands of times to try and win a "Dream Home" from HGTV, but I've had no luck. But this lucky guy wins it and can't afford it, because he owes over $600,000 in taxes! I wonder if he owes in back taxes? That's gotta be it.

"e-HGTV 'Dream Home' winner struggling to afford prize

TYLER, Texas A free house may be too expensive for Don Cruz to keep.

Cruz won the five-thousand-square-foot house in Texas in the Home and Garden Television "Dream Home" sweepstakes. The one-and-a-half (M) million-dollar home on the shores of Lake Tyler also has a boathouse.

But to keep the home, Cruz has to find a way to raise about 631-thousand dollars he owes in taxes. He had hoped to do that by renting out the boathouse and the master bedroom, but city regulations may prevent him from doing that.

He says he doesn't want to sell the house, and hopes the Tyler City Council can help him out.

Cruz won the home in April when he was selected from 39 (M) million entries. He used to live in suburban Chicago.

He should sale the house so he can pay his taxes. He could probabaly sale the house for as much as he owes on taxes I would think, especially if it is a nice home & brand new.

I read this and my wife and I had a conversation about it. We often would have things like that happen in the radio biz when we gave away large prizes. If you win a large prize, the TAXES are on YOU! So you might win a million dollar vacation..but you had better have some cash handy to pay the tax man!

One particular instance happened at KGIL where a listener won a hand made rug worth $2000. He didn't want to pay the tax on it so we ended up "comp-ing" him something else. (Turns out the GM ended up with the rug..nice huh?)

It kinda sucks, though. I mean, if you win something, you should be able to keep the prize without having to pay for anything else. Oh well. "Mr. Cruz" would be stupid not to sell his new house at this point. I know I wouldn't know where to get $600K to pay the tax.

One of those dream homes was located here in Panama City a year or two ago. I think it is on a waterfront lot overlooking North Bay.

It's the same thing that happened to all those Oprah audience members that got a free car..they had to pony up the tax cash! When there was a stink about it, Oprah paid the tax, but yea...just because you win something doesn't mean it is 100% free...

...one of reasons that Charlie Chaplin went away was the advent of the "income tax"....
