Message #2048 of 2499  *NEW* To From Subject Date ALL saundrabeach   Barbaro Losses His 8 month Fight 1/29/07, 2:35pm (Last Edited: 1/29/07, 2:41pm) I am saddened today to first hear from Lon and then look on the news to find that the beautiful and talented race horse, Barbaro, was finally put down today. His owners and support staff made this extemely hard decision after watching this brave gallant horse fight for 8 months since his injury during the triple crown to recover. Each time he took a turn for the worse, he rallied and survived the heroic measures the vets took to pull him through. While he never could have raced again, I am sure they had hopes of breeding him sucessfully for a further line of race horses. I naively thought that they could extract semen from him and inseminate other mares. The rules are such (I also looked into )that even if this procedure worked, and was winessed, the foals wouldn't be recognised as thoroughbreds. Mystifies me as to why not. I really thought he would have won the triple crown, and gone down in history as such. He most likely will still be remembered for his brave spirit and fight to stay alive 8 months after such a severe injury. I have been at a track when a horse was injured and it was shot right there. As I was just writing to Lon, it sounds like this was the right decision, sad as it is. One bright spot, I just read that Barbaro's broodmare is pregnant and will deliver this spring. Wreaths of carrots and veggies have been placed. They said his last meal before euthinization was grass. I too teared up. Within these thoroughbred horses truly beats the hearts of champions. I bet given the choice of lives going in the Barbaro would have chosen his own path knowing that during his time he was the best...to be at the top of his game...even if he knew what the outcome would be.
