I am saddened today to first hear from Lon and then look on the news to find that the beautiful and talented race horse, Barbaro, was finally put down today. His owners and support staff made this extemely hard decision after watching this brave gallant horse fight for 8 months since his injury during the triple crown to recover.
Each time he took a turn for the worse, he rallied and survived the heroic measures the vets took to pull him through.
While he never could have raced again, I am sure they had hopes of breeding him sucessfully for a further line of race horses.
I naively thought that they could extract semen from him and inseminate other mares. The rules are such (I also looked into )that even if this procedure worked, and was winessed, the foals wouldn't be recognised as thoroughbreds. Mystifies me as to why not.
I really thought he would have won the triple crown, and gone down in history as such. He most likely will still be remembered for his brave spirit and fight to stay alive 8 months after such a severe injury.
I have been at a track when a horse was injured and it was shot right there. That was an awful event for me. not to mention the horse.
