Free Agency
4/11/07, 8:39pm
Tonight is the first night of free agency. I wonder who will pursue whom and for how much? It is kind of like spinning the roulette wheel...round and round she goes where she stops nobody knows. Welcome to the table ladies and gentlemen. The game is $5 million dollar limit high stakes BBM holdem. Who will pay? Who will play? Who will seek a lower stakes game.

I don't resemble that remark this year...perhaps in years past (Xavier Nady for 3+ million anyone?).

I'm actually shocked everyone got who they were going after on the first night. Shocked.

Robert, you're Clemens signing is intriguing. I wonder if it will pay off? July and August will tell.

Is there something about Scot Shields that Rat Pack knows that the rest of us don't know? $3.611 million for a reliever? Ladies and gentlemen, I have a candidate for this year's Xavier Nady Award.

I'm out.

Hiya Jeremy! Nice to see ya around here again! And, congrats on not signing Mr. Nady to that one year, huge contract.

Regarding Shields, he is one of the best relievers to have in BBM because of his acorss the board great stats and his middle relief work. He was my #2, Zumaya was my #1 for these reasons.

BUT, I agree... he isn't worth that kind of money UNLESS you have plenty available. Shields would have been my first choice if he was 500k-100k, easily.

The pick isn't bad, but I suspect Chris could have easily gotten a discount when Shields' salary was cut in half in a few weeks.

Clemens, huh?

I forgot about Dice-K. Surprised you guys who didn't focus on pitching didn't go after him...

First off, it's great to be back.

I thought about going after Dice K, but I wanted to make sure I got a pitcher the first night. My biggest fear was 3 or 4 people would go after Dice K and a bidding war would ensue. So I went with the safe choice. I still have my questions about Dice K, but if he lives up to his billing, he could be the biggest bargain all year.

Rob, has everyone getting who they want the first night of free agency ever happened? I know the last 2 years it hasn't (at least I think it hasn't).

Now, what other positions do I need to fill? Hmmm....

I was looking for immediate help at pitcher so I went after Clemens....besides, I never was much of a fan of Dice-K's comedy routines.

Soooo??? Nobody has anything to say about the new Wheez Kids. Sheffield, Bonds, Griffey Jr, and Drew in the same outfield. There is enough surgical scars between them to circle the globe 1 and 1/2 times. I almost added Sosa last night just for grins.

In case you wanted to know where Tampico is, It is over the hill a ways. LOL

I wish my team was that good!

All joking aside, I really think this might be the worst team I have ever drafted. I'm not feeling all that confident so far this season & the season hasn't even started. Could be a long year for the Dragons. I'm definately probably going to lose some games early on.

Awe Rub.....You are such a sandbagger. You are going to win this going away by twenty games. I am not going to fall into your psychological trap.

LOL!

In the past, I'll admit I was sandbagging quiet a bit. I'm actually not sandbagging on this one. I'm dead serious. I really think I have one of the worst teams in the league on paper.

I like "sandbagging" anyway because if I really do start losing a lot, then it will atleast look like I wasn't lying & I knew what I was talking about.

Like you 2 guys, you 2 know I'm going to give it my best effort regardless.

I actually thought about tanking opening day because I made a mistake & did not intend on starting Carassco. I was sandbagging starting him & forgot to switch him out. He has one start, 3.1 IP, 1 ER. I may not have enough relief pitching to even get through that game, especially if the game engine allows it to go extra innings. I've been so busy trying just to fix my team after that horrible draft. I need help about everywhere. It has been so bad that last night was the first night I concentrated on RP in free agency. I'm still not done trying to repair my team though. It still needs a lot of work. So I thought I might just get rid of some bad stats early on.

I predict my experience will scratch out 50 wins this season. LOL! I crack myself up.

Re: Free Agency...Physchologically Speaking

I don't know for sure but I'm thinking that if I had 11 million dollars and I wanted to go after a free agent I would go after a free agent....I wouldn't just piddly ante around and allow someone to beat me out by a mere $25 K....I'd go after him. I'm thinking I wouldn't ever bid less than say 1.5 mil on any player and sometimes I'd bid higher....just to make sure everyone couldn't predict what I'd do. I dang shore wouldn't let someone just kick my butt in the free agent market like that and me with 11 + million. Getting whooped in free agency with that kind of buying power is just down right shameful.

I also think if I was in the free agent market against a team owner who was sitting on over a little more than 11 mil I wouldn't bid less than say 1.6 mil on any player just so he couldn't get some of these players and sometimes I'd bid higher just to make sure I didn't tip my hand. That is just me talking though you all do what you want to but that is just kind of what I think I might do.

After all we are talking about Gorzillany here (Shakes head in disgusted amazement) I'd bid high or stay home.

:p

Eh, I got outbid on one player. Granted, at this point in the season his pitching stats are stellar...but oh, well.

Yeah, I have money...lots of it...but it's all part of the "strategery".

If one player makes or breaks my season, I didn't have a very good team to begin with.

Let the games begin!

You're always up in the mix, so I'm sure all of these guys are liable to have career years. 75 HRs for Bonds, anybody?

Just be sure to have a ton of Elmer's glue and some masking tape in the clubhouse.

And, oh yah... a lot of dirt to rub on your old players' bodies.

Dem are fighting words, man. Johan just lost his first game already... I should have gone with Jake Westbrook, I just know it.
