RRBBS Search function

Yes, Marie and I are trying to keep ourselves busy... and, turns out, we're getting pretty prolific.

Marie is crocheting scarves again... and, as usual, they are awesome.

And, I have been fiddling with the RRBBS Blogs and code. I just quickly drew up an RRBBS search function which, surprisingly, I got right the first time (NO BUGS THAT I CAN SEE).

It is very barebones, but if you want to look for a message on RRBBS by keyword, you just need to enter the keyword at the end of this line:

http://www.rrbbs.com/cgi-bin/bbs/search.pl?

Example:

Find all posts with "murphy" in 'em:

http://www.rrbbs.com/cgi-bin/bbs/search.pl?murphy

Find all posts with "Paris Hilton" in 'em:

http://www.rrbbs.com/cgi-bin/bbs/search.pl?Paris

I will most definitely beautify this and make it easier to use (probably with a form, rather than having to manually type the word in an URL)... but, in the mean time, if you have any need... it is there.

Very cool! Is this something you coded yourself? Or did you use someone else's software? I'd love to add a search function to my site, but I don't do Perl...

Yah, it was pretty easy... my only worry way back when (in the days of the cyberatty.com incarnation of this BBS) was speed... now that most folks have high-speed access, it isn't a worry... so, looking for something to do other than waiting for K to have the baby, I hacked away.

15 minutes later, voila.

It was easy here because every message is stored in an individual file... I just cycle through, searching for a particular string... and post up messages that contain the text.

On your site, what are you wanting to make "searchable?"

I'd be more than happy to help you out.

I was thinking of the grave site pictures. I get a lot of email from people who have found their long lost ancestors from pictures I've put on my site and Find-A-Grave. I'd love to make it easier for them to look.

I would think it should be easy to implement. Just something that looks for the text in all HTML files at http://www.ldphotography.net/Graves/, including all subdirectories. It'd be nice to have my entire site searchable as long as I'm adding the function, though.

You'd have to trust me... I would need access to your site, so that I could see the format. It would be easiest if you kept an index file of some sort of the photos in the following kind of format:

nameopicturefile^description of picture
nameopicturefile2^description of picture2
etc
etc

I finished up the search function tonight...

If you encounter any bugs, let me know.

I think I could trust you.

This thread got me wondering, though, and I did a search for free scripts and found one that looks really interesting. I'll probably give that one a shot and see how it goes. If it doesn't work the way I want, I might take you up on the offer.

Looks good! Now you just need to add a link to it on all the pages here.
